The following is a comprehensive, although not complete, list of websites and resources that relate to civics and civics education in Delaware.
Civics Websites and Resources
- Delaware's Department
of Education site identifies the state's curriculum
framework, content standards, and grade cluster standard statements
and sample activities for Social Studies.
- Published by the National
Conference of State Legislatures to educate citizens
on the legislative process, build links between schools and legislators,
and provide a forum on issues. This site highlights "Project
Citizen," which engages students in monitoring and influencing
public policy, and "America's Legislators Back to School Day."
- This site, published by the Center
for Civic Education, provides sample lesson plans
and curriculum materials for elementary, middle and high school
grades on student participation in local government, the Constitution,
and citizen's rights.
- Take a look at the University of Delaware's Delaware
Center for Teacher Education site, which links the
resources of the University with the professional development needs
of the Delaware education community.
- The Delaware
Social Studies Education Project at the University
of Delaware works to advance the status and quality of social studies
education, maintain a social studies resource center, identify and
disseminate instructional materials aligned with the state's content
standards, deliver quality professional development, and keep educators
informed about the latest developments in the field.
- The Delaware Center
for Economic Education & Entrepreneurship provides
hands-on workshop opportunities for economics teachers. The centers
programs encourage teachers to instill practical skills such as
informed decision-making in their students.
- Published by CIVITAS,
this site includes lesson plans, original journal articles and book
reviews as well as civics headlines. It also provides exercises
teaching fundamental democratic values.
- The Freedoms
Foundation at Valley Forge is a non-profit organization
dedicated to teaching young people the principles upon which our
nation was founded and conveying the close link between the rights
and the responsibilities of citizens in society.
- The
White House website provides links to US government
agencies. Also, access government information via subject index
and search engine. Take a historical tour of the White House. Includes
a kid's page.
- The State
of Delaware Facts page includes information on census
data, income, geography, taxes, and links to elected officials.
- A site provided by The
Dirksen Congressional Center features an engine to
find elected officials by ZIP code. It also provides lesson plans
with supporting historical documents and links.
- The Delaware
Public Archives provides information on finding primary
source materials for your lesson plans.
- Visit the State
of Delaware Department of Elections for information
on voter registration, political parties, election forms, past elections
and election districts.
- The Delaware
Geographic Alliance provides resources and programs
for students, pre- and in-service teachers, administrators, and
parents on geography learning.
- The Delaware
Heritage Commission site provides information on
the state's heritage and history as well as useful links.
- Known for sponsoring such programs as the Delaware High School Mock Trial and We the People Competitions, the Delaware Law Related Education Center provides resources to support law-related education initiatives in
Delaware. The site contains lesson plans, as well as information about
teacher training programs, youth summits, and other ways to bring
law-related education into the classroom.
