| Michelle Kung | 2014 | PHDUAPP | https://www.bidenschool.udel.edu/Images Profile Alumnus/Michelle Kung.png | Executive Director, Business Angel Network of Southeast Asia |
PHDUAPP'14 - My speciality focuses on urban sustainability in Asian cities. I developed my career path and professional experiences in this field since I started the Ph.D. program in the US in 2004. After working for academia, public and private sectors, I have built comprehensive skill-sets for my career development in urban energy and environmental governance.
Sustainability, local pollution, climate change, and energy security have become significant issues accompanying Asian countries’ urbanization. Although urbanization in Asia has significantly enhanced economic development and social change, its environmental performance has not matched its economic or human development progress. In many cases, this unprecedented economic development has resulted in multiple urban sustainability challenges. My Ph.D. dissertation, therefore, explored and compared climate change mitigation initiatives in global cities, particularly in the building sector.
During my Ph.D. study, I participated in some international projects related to energy and environmental policies in Asian major cities (Please refer to my CV). I was a Ph.D. Fellow with the United Nations University – Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS, United Nations’ think tank) for the “Urban Low-Carbon Development with the Co-Benefits Approach” project. We focused on co-benefits of greenhouse gas emission reduction by reducing local pollutants and vice versa. I was asked to take up a position in Singapore and work for the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) under the Ministry of National Development of Singapore Government as lead researcher on urban sustainability policies. At this position, I authored the book titled “Built by Singapore- from Slums to a Sustainable Built Environment” (www.clc.gov.sg/documents/uss/USS_Built_by_Singapore.pdf) - a comprehensive body of knowledge to aid the next generation government officials and urban leaders from developing countries. This opportunity allowed me to be involved in several international training programs for global urban leaders.
I switched to gain hands-on private sector experiences through the Business Development and Special Projects Manager position at Green Koncepts, a clean-tech innovator with cloud-based energy management & internet of things platform in Singapore. I led next generation testbed projects, strategic engagements with government agencies, international market development and special intellectual property projects.
In order to deepen my managerial and operational skills, I'm now holding the Executive Director position at an international NGO - Business Angel Network Southeast Asia - to lead the organisation to promote early stage investment and nurture technology start-up ecosystem in this region. Relevant technologies including clean tech, and IoT for smart cities are related to my career. The experience also inspired me to explore green investment and green technology development globally.
| https://www.bidenschool.udel.edu/Images Profile Alumnus/Forms/DispForm.aspx?ID=47 | |
