Lighting the Way to a Better World A MESSAGE FROM THE BIDEN SCHOOL DEAN Dear colleagues, alumni and friends, As my first semester as Dean of the Biden School draws to a close, I am grateful for the opportunity to get to know this vibrant and varied community of students, scholars, policy analysts and scientists, and, of course, the incomparable faculty and staff who help make the Biden School great. While I still have much more to learn, I am inspired by our team’s scholarly and applied research, their public service and their commitment to the Biden School’s students and education. Three key themes seem to characterize these efforts. Bringing light to heated debate – Biden School researchers focus attention on critical policy issues, illuminate the causes and consequences of public problems and identify policies and programs that can be used to address them. Our seminars and workshops bring together a broad range of scholars, practitioners, policymakers and thought leaders from around the world for productive discussions that confront difficult social problems. Learning in practice – The “Delaware Model” of education remains a hallmark of a Biden School education – with experiential learning threaded through classes, internships, research assistantships and public service activities. These are the rule at Biden, as classroom learning is complemented by – and complements – the practice of public policy research, service delivery and political engagement throughout the year. Making the world a better place – The passion and commitment to making change for the public good is fundamental to the Biden School enterprise. We strive to equip the next generation of leaders, policy analysts, social researchers and practitioners to see the problems that challenge us, to craft solutions and to build the partnerships and collaborations that will make those solutions a reality.
