Students focus on the influence of policy and economics on the development of the energy sector with a special emphasis on sustainable energy development. Students learn public policy and economics , and how the private and public sectors can support sustainable energy and the environment. The concentration includes coursework across discipline's to prepare students for careers in research, environment and energy economics, and policy economics.

Students gain a broad understanding of climate change policy at the local, national and international scale. Students learn about climate change and greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions projection scenarios, such as those developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The concentration includes coursework in social science, economics and statistical analysis, as well as science and technology, in order to prepare graduates for a research career or graduate education in climate change and long-term policy analysis and planning.

Students gain an understanding of the scientific and technical constraints and opportunities that are pertinent to sustainable energy development. The courses in this concentration bridge scientific and technological knowledge with an understanding of energy and environmental policies that influence energy technology design choice. Students are equipped with an understanding of government policy and economic issues.
