It's time for another special edition of #MeetUsMonday!
Today we salute IPA Policy Scientist Marcia Scott, who is retiring after 17 years of service with the University of Delaware. Marcia has made a mark on Delaware through the development of tools and resources to make communities attractive, inclusive, efficient, healthy, and resilient, available on the Delaware Complete Communities Planning Toolbox.
Marcia also is incredibly dedicated to enriching the education of our students—future leaders in local government and public administration. Marcia will continue as the advisor to UD's ICMA Student Chapter through the end of the school year. Read on for Marcia's responses to our five-question quiz.
How would you describe yourself beyond your title?
Beyond my role with IPA, I’m passionate about family time and being a wife to John, mom to Shane and Troy, mom-in-law to Karine, and “Grammy” to Tyler and Kane. I’m also an outdoors enthusiast, animal lover, and photography fanatic!
What are you working on?
I work on a range of public policy issues and applied research. Project outcomes help to advance planning for healthy and complete communities; improve mobility and interconnectivity; promote sustainable land use and transportation planning practices; foster walkable, bikeable and transit-friendly communities; and improve transportation equity and multi-modal transportation options. Many work products are showcased with our online Delaware Complete Communities Planning Toolbox. Check it out!
Where are you working?
I’m working remotely from Sussex County. While I miss UD’s beautiful campus, my workspace and home has stunning views of the Pepper Creek and Indian River’s wildlife, wetlands, and migratory birds.
Why do you do this work?
I like working with talented colleagues and graduate/undergrad public administration fellows on diverse projects. I enjoy testing participatory public engagement methods like transportation pop-up demonstrations and a map-based survey recently used for a public art inventory. As the advisor to UD’s ICMA Student Chapter, I’m excited to help students discover career opportunities in local government management.
When I'm not working, I'm:
Before work, I’ll either stationary swim using a tether or go rollerblading. My greatest feat this summer was scooping up a tiny terrapin while rollerblading, then releasing it into a marsh. Most weekends, we bike on nearby trails and pontoon to the Rehoboth Bay.
