UD announces new semester-long opportunity to study in Washington, D.C.
5:47 p.m., May 5, 2015--The Democracy Project of the Institute for
Public Administration in the School of Public Policy and Administration
at the University of Delaware has announced the establishment of the
University of Delaware DC Experience.
The DC Experience will allow UD students to spend the 2016 spring
semester in the nations capital, where they will live, work and
study. The program will include an internship opportunity, two
three-credit courses and the option for a research project.
Meetings for students interested in participating in the program will
be held with Ed Freel, director of the Democracy Project, at 5 p.m. on
both Wednesday, May 6, in 185 Graham Hall and on Thursday, May 7, in 176
Graham Hall.
Students will be expected to complete an internship with a
congressional delegation, a federal agency, a nonprofit/advocacy group
or related organization for six credits. Students also will enroll in
two three-credit courses: "Policy Practicum in Washington" and "Power,
Inequality and Social Policy." The courses will be co-listed between
political science and public policy.
The program will begin on Sunday, February 7, 2016, and end on
Friday, May 15, 2016. Housing will be provided through the Washington
Intern Student Housing program.
The program will be directed by Freel, who worked in the Carter
Administration, served as a chief of staff in the U.S. House for 10
years, was Delawares secretary of state and most recently served as a
senior adviser to U.S. Sen. Tom Carper. Freel is a policy scientist in
the Institute for Public Administration and a member of the faculty of
the School of Public Policy and Administration. For the past four
Januaries, he managed a UD Winter Session program in D.C.
