​​​FROM THE DIRECTOR

2022 is a special year for CCRS, as the Center turns 50. CCRS was founded in 1972 as the Urban Agent program, borne of a vision by the founding Director, James Sills, of putting academic research into the service of social and economic change on a grassroots level. Sills practiced this as both an academic and a community organizer, and went on to get elected as Wilmington’s first Black mayor. This anniversary year gives CCRS an opportunity to reflect on that legacy and reaffirm our commitment to the values and call to action that led to its founding as we head into the next half-century.

​​​NONPROFIT & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program: Registration is open for the Spring 2022 Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program (formerly known as the Nonprofit Management Certificate Program—NPMCC). The program is available in a new hybrid format with a balance of in person and virtual sessions and starts in March 2022. In addition to receiving critical content from accomplished trainers in the sector, participants build on the course modules to assess their organizations and develop action plans in the strategic areas of their choice. The peer-to-peer sharing and networking aspect of the course is a great benefit of the cohort model of the NLCP. More information and a link to registration can be found he​re. 

Nonprofit Academic Centers Council:  Signe Bell, CCRS’s Director of Nonprofit & Community Programs was recently elected Vice President for Membership for the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council, where she has served on the Board of Directors since February of 2020.​​

​​KIDS COUNT IN DELAWARE

KIDS COUNT in Delaware has launched "Data to Action," a webinar series bringing together leaders and stakeholders from across the state to engage in conversation related to current conditions for children given our ever changing environment related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Reviewing the most current data and research, panelists offer insight to conditions in which children are currently living as well as examine policy decisions which could be impactful during these times.

​KIDS COUNT in Delaware Census Brief: 2020 Child Population reviews the U.S. Census Bureau Redistricting Data that was released on August 12, 2021. The release is the first from the 2020 Census that breaks out data by all children compared to all adults. While Delaware's total population increased by 10.2 percent between 2010 and 2020, Delaware's child (0-17) population increased by less than one percentage point (640 children or 0.3%) according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Because of growth in the adult population, children now make up a smaller proportion of the state's total population

​KIDS COUNT in Delaware’s 2021 Legislative Page-A-Day Style Calendar will be released in mid-January, coinciding with the start of Delaware’s legislative session. Like our annual fact book, this calendar shares indicator data and policy solutions related to obstacles to success for Delaware children. The 2022 calendar has a special focus on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Delaware children. Data are grouped into categories of health, education, economic security, and family/community. A very special thanks goes to the Delaware Division of Libraries for co-sponsoring this year’s calendar. Opioid Use Disorder in Delaware: Policies and Programs. Emily Loughlin, CCRS Graduate Research Assistant and CCRS policy scientists Eli Turkel, Erin Nescott, and Rebecca McColl release a brief summarizing opioid use disorder and recent programs and policies in our state. Delaware’s Fertility Rate and COVID-19. CCRS’s policy scientists Rebecca McCall and Erin (Lynch) Nescott recent research brief on the fertility rate in Delaware, set in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic can be found her​e.​

Impact of Area Deprivation And Obesity Status On Development Of Systemic Hypertension In Youth, Carissa Marie Baker-Smith, Robert Akins, Cathy Wu, Babatunde Ogunnaike, Bethany Wolf, Mary Joan McDuffie, Erin (Lynch) Nescott. An INBRE funded project looking at hypertension among children (PI: Carissa Baker-Smith, MD MPH FAHA FACC of Nemours Children’s Hospital) has been accepted for presentation at the upcoming American College of Cardiology 71st Annual Scientific Session, April 2-4, 2022.

Delaware Medicaid Research. CCRS’ Medicaid Research Program Director, Mary Joan McDuffie​, presented a Tech Talk on an overview of different Delaware Medicaid research projects for Delaware’s ACCEL program on November 4, 2021.

​LARC Unintended Consequences? Katie Fitzpatrick​, PhD, presented Does Increased Use of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) Have Unintended Costs as part of the ACCEL’s Innovative Discovery Series on November 11, 2021. The presentation was based on an ACCEL funded research project on sexually transmitted diseases and the use of long acting reversible contraceptives (LARC); CCRS policy scientists Katie Gifford and Mary Joan McDuffie​ are participating in this research.

​​HOUSING

​Unsheltered Homelessness Study: Stephen Metraux is Principal Investigator of a study funded by the City of Philadelphia in which he leads a team of researchers from the University of Delaware and University of Pennsylvania charged with conducting a thorough assessment of outreach and other services that are provided to people who are homeless and living in places other than shelters. In particular, the project will outline what, among what the City is doing for this homeless population, works and what barriers exist that keep people who are experiencing unsheltered homelessness from leaving homelessness. The study will be based upon Philadelphia’s extensive database of administrative records, as well as upon interviews with persons who have experienced unsheltered homelessness as well as services providers.

​Webinars: CCRS and Institute of Public Policy (IPA) present the second in a series of webinars focused on affordable housing issues in Delaware. This session, titled “Home as a Cornerstone: How Housing Impacts the Rest of Our Lives” featured Michelle Taylor (President & CEO, United Way of Delaware); Ann Aviles (Housing Advocate & UD Associate Professor); Tim Gibbs (Executive Director, Delaware Academy of Medicine/Delaware Public Health Association) and Marilyn Smith (Executive Director, Dover/Kent County Metropolitan Planning Organization).

​Jumpstart Wilmington: In early December, Jumpstart Wilmington hosted a Cohort Mixer, to celebrate our first five cohorts, mentors, presenters, and partners! Jumpstart Wilmington has had 46 graduates from their program since cohorts began! It was an exciting evening of networking at The Queen in Wilmington. Additional networking opportunities will be taking place throughout 2022, for example, Monthly Roundtables will take place the 3rd Wednesday of the Month. Jumpstart Wilmington was launched to help Wilmington residents to become developers of their own neighborhood through quality, community-focused real estate development training and financing options. ​Fireside Chat – On November 17, Steve Metraux sat down with U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development Senior Advisor Richard Cho to discuss homeless policy in a dinner and “fireside chat” event hosted by the UD’s Biden Institute and attended by members of both the university and statewide communities.
