As the COVID-19 continues to affect people around the world, communities are struggling to react fast and efficiently. CCRS students Talla Cisse and Cara Clase are tackling this issue head-on for vulnerable communities in Senegal.
In December of 2019, MPA student Talla Cisse founded Foundation for a Healthier Senegal (FOHSEN): a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides medical supplies and staff to under-resourced, rural communities in Senegal.
When I visited Senegal in 2017, I saw children dying from curable diseases, said Cisse. Rural villages were struggling to give people the medical resources they needed, and I knew I had to take action. This is what inspired Cisse to create FOHSEN. In January of 2020, the non-profit was able to raise over $25,000 in a matter of months.
But FOHSENs work has just begun. As COVID-19 continues to spread, Senegal is starting to see a rise in cases. As of May 4, the country has 1,271 confirmed cases. This number is expected to rise, especially in the most remote communities.
In an effort to help these rural villages beat the curve, Cisse teamed-up with Ph.D. student Cara Clase to raise funds for COVID-19 relief in Senegal. Together, they are running a campaign to help mobilize masks, gowns, and face shields to these high-risk communities.
