Interest meetings will be held on Thursday, May 11, and again on Monday, May 15, for students interested in learning about the University of Delaware DC Experience.
The University of Delaware DC Experience, established by the Democracy Project of the Institute for Public Administration in the School of Public Policy and Administration, will allow UD students to spend the 2018 spring semester in our nations capital where they will live, work, and study.
The program will include an internship opportunity, two three-credit courses, and the option for a research project.
Students will be expected to complete an internship with a congressional delegation, a federal agency, a nonprofit/advocacy group, or related organization for six credits. Students will also enroll in two three-credit courses: Policy Practicum in Washington and Power, Inequality and Social Policy. The courses will be co-listed between political science and public policy.
The program will begin on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, and end on Friday, May 18, 2018. Students will share a townhouse in the Capitol Hill area of Washington.
The program will be co-directed by Leann Moore, Institute for Public Administration, and Ed Freel, director of the Democracy Project.
Freel worked in the Carter Administration, as a chief of staff in the U.S. House of Representatives for 10 years, as Delawares Secretary of State and most recently as a senior adviser to U.S. Sen. Tom Carper. Freel is a policy scientist in the Institute for Public Administration and a member of the faculty of the School of Public Policy and Administration.
Freel managed a UD Winter Session program in Washington, D.C., for four years, before the program became a semester-long experience in 2016.
The interest meetings with Freel and Moore will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, in Room 185 Graham Hall, and at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 15, also in Room 185 Graham Hall.
