I grew up in Newark and after living in Washington, DC, for nearly ten years, I was interested in coming home to a great school. I was particularly attracted to the idea of not going into to debt while earning my Masters and impressed that Delaware's Lieutenant Governor, John Carney, had graduated from the program.
My Research Assistantship is with Delaware's former Secretary of State, Ed Freel, working on service learning and civic engagement. I am very active in youth politics and recently published a book, Millennial Manifesto, about youth activism in America, therefore when I am off campus I spend a lot of time either speaking about youth activism on different college campuses or even doing workshops at high schools.
I worked about 4 hours a day with Ed Freel researching civic engagement and service learning. This past year was exciting because I helped write the report and coordinate the Council that established service learning at UD. Additionally, I supported the University's Democracy Project which was very in line with my interests. Work varied a great deal from day to day, but each week was a new challenge, generally very enjoyable and educational.
I love politics. I love talking politics, debating politics, political organizing, political history, political TV, even political comedy. When not organizing, I enjoy running and working out, occasionally basketball and flag football. I'm always ready for happy hour and nachos and enjoy staying up late at night spending time with friends. When not staying up late working on political campaigns, I enjoy going to the restaurants and bars in Newark (and common trips to DC). The graduate student body is very social and I really enjoy just hanging out with friends.
The people at the University of Delaware are all very interesting. The professors have a great deal of experience and the students come from all over the world. I strongly recommend Delaware for students who want to get a quality education while working in your area of interest without going into debt. This school has a lot of opportunity and is a fun place to get a Masters.
