Kalim Shah, assistant professor in the Biden School, is the new coordinator of the United Nations Universities Consortium of Small Island States. Shah was introduced in this role during the annual Global Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships Dialogue at the U.N. High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, held July 7-16, 2020.
The consortium represents over a dozen island nation universities and several partner universities in advanced nations, with interests in building national research and training capacities in island nations to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
In his invited statement, Shah said, The consortium works to accelerate growth of the knowledge and skills that island nations need for development. COVID-19 now casts a shadow on our future, but island universities are re-focusing strategies to contend with its repercussions and universities like UD are well-positioned to help leverage island creativity, innovation and technology to rebuild clean, green, blue and equitable island economies." He continued, The Island Policy Lab that I have initiated here at UD will benefit from the consortium and working so closely with the U.N. partners since it provides a global platform opportunity for UD to engage our research talent in meaningful ways to island sustainability issues.
