Steve Metraux, Director of the Center for Community Research & Service (CCRS); Barbara Poppe, former executive director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness; and Alexa Timmreck, a PhD student and CCRS Research Assistant, were contracted by the City of Albuquerque to assess the need for expanded shelter capacity given the recent dynamics of homelessness in this city. The report, submitted in November 2019, found the that the city would need to almost double the amount of shelter beds now available in order to accommodate demand, and provided other means to address the need for shelter, including permanent supportive housing options for people who are chronically homeless and disabled, that would provide alternatives to additional shelter beds while reducing the size of the homeless population. For media coverage of this study, please see the recent article in the Albuquerque Journal.
