Work of the Biden School's Center for Historic Architecture and Design was featured in two recent announcements by Delaware Historic & Cultural Affairs reporting successful nominations to the National Register of Historic Places.
The CHAD-authored nomination of Parker's Dairy Palace was selected by the National Park Service for addition to the National Register on October 15, 2019. This 1950's-vintage drive-in/walk-up soft-serve ice cream stand is located on Route 141 across from the New Castle Airport. The history of the Dairy Place is tied to the story of suburban development in America, with increased interest in automobile transportation during the post-World War II era and the emerging popularity of roadside food stands.
Details of the site and a summary of the historic context that CHAD researched and used in the successful nomination are given in the article on history.delaware.gov announcing this new National Register listing.
The State Historic Preservation Office also recently announced three other new successful Delaware nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, including two produced by CHAD: the Downtown Harrington Historic District, and the Taylor's Bridge School in southeastern New Castle County. Read the details in the article by Madeline Dunn, Delaware Historic & Cultural Affairs.
