Vice President Biden Announces Biden Institute Policy Advisory Board

WASHINGTON – On Thursday, March 22, Vice President Joe Biden is announcing the formation of a policy advisory board to support his work at the Biden Institute, as well as a set of new policy ideas to make sure Americans are able to obtain quality jobs that will grow the middle class and our economy. The Policy Advisory Board includes some of the most important voices on pressing issues facing America today (see list of board members below). These experts will work with Vice President Biden and the Biden Institute to shape, influence, and solve these policy challenges .“Joe Biden has been a leader for working Americans for his entire career,” said Mary Kay Henry, President of the Service Employees International Union. “I am thrilled to join the Policy Advisory Board at the Biden Institute and look forward to working with Vice President Biden to find solutions that will help working people unite so they can use their power in numbers. "Vice President Biden is announcing the policy board at a Biden Institute event in Washington, where he is also releasing ideas to keep Americans working and succeeding today and in a future of increasing automation and globalization. These policy ideas are the result of work done by Vice President Biden and the Biden Institute after an event last fall where the Vice President convened experts to frame the challenges posed by automation and globalization. As part of that event, Vice President Biden published a blog post emphasizing that a job is about more than a paycheck – it is also about dignity and about one’s place in their community. “To put workers first, we have three promises to keep,” said Vice President Biden in a new piece published today on the Biden Institute Blog and Biden Forum. “First, we need to make sure hard-working Americans have the skills and opportunities to succeed in the jobs of the future. Second, we need to make sure people are paid fairly for their work – meaning those who work hard and do their part should share in the benefits from their contributions, allowing them to earn a good living and get ahead. And third, we need policies that allow the middle class to maintain or improve their standard of living. A small pay raise doesn’t help much if the costs of housing, health care, and education are rising significantly more. "Today, the Vice President put forward details regarding how all of us – Democrats and Republicans, business leaders and labor leaders, employers and workers – can work together to achieve this first promise: making sure hard-working Americans have the skills and opportunities to get a good job and keep it. In the coming months, the Biden Institute will examine additional solutions related to helping workers succeed. Vice President Biden will host a public panel discussion on these issues at the Newseum. Panel participants are listed below:

Heather Boushey, Executive Director and Chief Economist at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth;

Tom Donohue, President and CEO, United States Chamber of Commerce;

Dr. Charlene M.
